The United States has approved a substantial $20 billion sale of fighter jets and military equipment to Israel as the nation continues its 10-month-long conflict in the Gaza Strip. Despite the urgency of the situation, the Pentagon noted that the deliveries of these weapons, including nearly $19 billion in F-15 fighter jets, will not commence for several years.
U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken authorized the deal, which also includes tank cartridges valued at $774 million, explosive mortar cartridges worth over $60 million, and army vehicles totaling $583 million. According to the Pentagon, while some equipment may begin arriving in 2026, the production and delivery of the F-15 jets are expected to start in 2029. Experts suggest that certain items could potentially be delivered earlier.
"The United States is committed to the security of Israel, and it is vital to U.S. national interests to assist Israel in maintaining a strong and ready self-defense capability," the Pentagon stated in its announcement. Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant responded with gratitude, highlighting the importance of U.S. support in ensuring Israel's military advantage in the region.
This approval follows the U.S.'s ongoing support of Israel since the conflict in Gaza escalated in October. The U.S. has already provided Israel with more than 10,000 2,000-pound bombs and thousands of Hellfire missiles, underlining its role as Israel's primary ally and military supplier.
