Kericho Governor Eric Mutai Faces Senate Impeachment Trial Next Week

Kericho Governor Eric Mutai is set to face an impeachment trial in the Senate plenary next week. The three-day hearing will run from Wednesday, August 27, to Friday, August 29, 2025. During this period, senators will decide whether to uphold the County Assembly’s decision to remove him or save him from impeachment for the second time.

Senate Plenary to Handle the Trial

Senate Speaker Amason Kingi confirmed that the hearing would take place in plenary. This decision came after a motion to form a special committee failed due to a lack of support.

The motion was introduced by Senate Majority Leader Aaron Cheruiyot, who expected Minority Leader Stewart Madzayo to second it. However, Madzayo openly opposed the idea.

“I hereby move the motion of impeachment and invite the minority leader to second,” Cheruiyot stated.“I do not support the motion,” Madzayo responded.

With no seconder, the proposal collapsed. Further attempts to settle the matter through an 11-member special committee also failed. Deputy Speaker Kathuri Murungi suggested an alternative approach, but Speaker Kingi ruled it out, citing Senate standing orders.

Why Kericho Governor Eric Mutai Was Impeached

Governor Eric Mutai was impeached after 33 out of 47 MCAs in the Kericho County Assembly voted to remove him from office.

The governor faces several accusations, including:

  • Abuse of office

  • Illegal and irregular appointments

  • Unlawful dismissal of senior county officials

This is not Mutai’s first impeachment battle. He survived a similar attempt in October 2024, making this a critical moment for his political career.

What Happens Next

The upcoming Senate hearing will determine Governor Mutai’s fate. If the Senate upholds the impeachment, he will be removed from office. However, if a majority of senators vote against it, Mutai will retain his seat.

All eyes are now on the Senate as Kericho residents, political leaders, and the entire nation await the outcome.
