Pope Francis, the head of the Catholic Church and Bishop of Rome, has died at the age of 88, the Vatican has announced. His death was confirmed early Monday morning by Cardinal Kevin Farrell, who stated that the pontiff passed away peacefully at 7:35 a.m.
“Dearest brothers and sisters, with deep sorrow I must announce the death of our Holy Father Francis,” said Cardinal Farrell. “His entire life was dedicated to the service of the Lord and His Church.”
Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires, Argentina, became pope in 2013 following Pope Benedict XVI's resignation. He was the first Jesuit, the first Latin American, and the first pope from the Southern Hemisphere, a trailblazing figure whose papacy reshaped the tone and direction of the Catholic Church.
Pope Francis Marked by Compassion and Reform
Throughout his 12-year tenure, Pope Francis was revered for his humility, progressive stance on social issues, and devotion to the underprivileged. He consistently emphasized mercy, dialogue, and inclusivity, urging the Church to embrace modern realities while holding firmly to the Gospel’s core message of love.

From washing the feet of inmates and migrants to advocating for climate action and interfaith unity, Pope Francis brought a pastoral presence to the global stage.
“He taught us to live the values of the Gospel with fidelity, courage and universal love, especially in favour of the poorest and most marginalised,” the Vatican statement continued.
Declining Health and Final Public Appearances
Ongoing health concerns marked the latter years of Francis’ papacy. He was hospitalized multiple times in recent months, most notably in February for bilateral pneumonia and a prolonged respiratory crisis.
Despite these setbacks, Pope Francis remained engaged with the faithful. His final public appearance came on March 23, when he briefly addressed crowds from the balcony of Gemelli Hospital, smiling and giving a thumbs-up in a symbolic gesture of strength.
He returned to the Vatican shortly after, where he continued treatment and recovery efforts under 24-hour medical supervision.
Next Steps: Preparing for a New Pontiff
As tradition dictates, preparations are now underway for the papal conclave the process through which a new pope will be elected. The conclave, involving the College of Cardinals, is expected to begin within the next 15 to 20 days.
Pope Francis leaves behind a legacy of transformation. His leadership style, focused on mercy over dogma and action over rhetoric, will be remembered as a pivotal chapter in the Church’s modern history.
Global Mourning and Tributes
Catholic communities worldwide have begun holding vigils and prayer services to honor the late pontiff. Leaders from various faiths and nations have sent their condolences, acknowledging Francis as a bridge-builder and moral voice in an era of division.
From the slums of Argentina to the halls of the Vatican, Pope Francis championed the cause of the voiceless. As the world grieves, many find comfort in his enduring message: “The name of God is mercy.”
May Pope Francis rest in peace.
