A heavy police deployment has been witnessed at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) as former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua is expected to jet back into the country from his six-week tour of the United States.
By Thursday mid-morning, anti-terror police officers had taken positions at key sections of the airport. Water cannons were also spotted at strategic points, signaling heightened security measures.

Supporters Gather at JKIA
Hundreds of Gachagua’s supporters thronged the airport, dressed in Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) attire. They carried placards and chanted slogans in support of their leader.
“Our countdown is at two hours before we receive him. I’m sure he has seen the large crowd waiting to welcome him. This shows he listens to Kenyans and remains connected to their issues,” said one supporter who spoke to Jiupdate.
Background to Rigathi Gachagua’s Return
Gachagua, who was impeached in October 2024 after a fallout with President William Ruto, has spent the past six weeks in the U.S. During his visit, he held several public forums with the Kenyan diaspora, where he criticized Ruto’s administration over corruption, extrajudicial killings, and alleged human rights violations.
Tension Between Authorities and Supporters
However, his return is expected to trigger a possible confrontation between his supporters and the authorities. The DCP has called on over one million supporters to turn up at JKIA to welcome Gachagua.
In response, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen warned that the government will take legal action if the gatherings descend into chaos. He emphasized that security agencies are fully prepared to maintain law and order.
Planned Rally at Kamukunji Grounds
After his arrival, Gachagua plans to head to Kamukunji Grounds for a public rally. However, CS Murkomen insisted that the rally will only be allowed if DCP follows the law by notifying the police in advance for security preparations.
“The government will not allow unsanctioned public rallies that disrupt peace and business in Nairobi,” Murkomen stated.
Police Assure Security
Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja also confirmed that the National Police Service (NPS) is in full control of security arrangements. He assured the public that “normalcy” is expected during Gachagua’s return.
