Israel Rejects Ceasefire as Strikes on Hezbollah intensified

ree

In a significant escalation of the Israel-Hezbollah conflict, Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz emphatically dismissed international calls for a 21-day ceasefire, made by the United States and France, in response to rising tensions along the Israel-Lebanon border. Katz stated, "There will be no ceasefire in the north. We will continue to fight against the Hezbollah terrorist organization with all our strength until victory and the safe return of the residents of the north to their homes."

The call for a ceasefire comes as Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati expressed hope for a peaceful resolution. However, Katz’s statement dashed those hopes, signaling a determination to continue military operations against Hezbollah. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, en route to address the United Nations, has yet to respond formally to the ceasefire proposal, but has directed the Israeli military to intensify its efforts.

The conflict has seen no respite, with Israeli airstrikes overnight targeting around 75 Hezbollah sites in southern Lebanon and the Bekaa Valley. Tragically, a recent airstrike on a building in the town of Younine killed at least 23 Syrians, including many women and children. This incident highlights the grave humanitarian crisis in Lebanon, which is currently home to approximately 1.5 million Syrian refugees.

As the international community urges de-escalation, the situation remains precarious, raising concerns over potential ground invasions and further civilian casualties. The looming question now is whether diplomatic efforts can overcome the ongoing violence and lead to a sustainable resolution.
