The CFR Global Board of Advisors brings together a diverse group of influential leaders from 25 countries, including top academics, business executives, civil society leaders, and politicians. It also counts among its members former secretaries of state, CIA directors, high-profile financiers, attorneys, professors, CEOs, corporate directors, and respected media personalities.

Mwangi expressed his excitement about leveraging this position to promote Africa’s economic growth and foster global partnerships. “I am honoured to have been asked to join the Council on Foreign Relations Global Board of Advisors, and I am grateful for the chance to bring a positive African narrative to the discussions,” he said. “The opportunity to highlight Africa’s contributions to the world now and for decades to come as the continent takes its place on the global stage will mean greater productive collaborations for countries around the world to sustainably partner with the people of Africa.”

A Visionary Journey from Humble Beginnings

Mwangi’s remarkable story is one of inspiration and determination. Born into humble beginnings as a goat herder, his life changed dramatically when he took on the monumental task of reviving the struggling Equity Building Society (EBS) in 1993. Founded in 1984 by Peter Munga, EBS had been declared insolvent and was on the brink of dissolution. Recognizing Mwangi’s potential, Munga entrusted him with the mission to save the institution.

Under Mwangi’s visionary leadership, the society became Equity Group Holdings Limited, one of Africa’s leading financial services providers. His innovative strategies, customer-centric model, and dedication to financial inclusion helped Equity grow from a small building society into a pan-African financial powerhouse, earning him numerous accolades on the global stage.

A Platform for Advancing Africa’s Economic Agenda

Mwangi’s appointment to the CFR Board represents a significant step for Africa's representation in influential global dialogues. As a member, he aims to shift perceptions and champion sustainable partnerships that unlock the continent’s vast potential.

His inclusion also reflects CFR’s recognition of Africa’s growing importance in global economics and geopolitics. Mwangi’s insights on innovation, development, and financial inclusion will bring a unique perspective to the Council’s discussions on international relations.

The Council on Foreign Relations: A Think Tank of Global Impact

Founded in 1921, CFR has played a pivotal role in shaping US foreign policy and international affairs. It provides an invaluable platform for discussion, research, and policy recommendations. With Mwangi’s inclusion, CFR signals a commitment to broader global perspectives.

Mwangi’s journey from a goat herder to a global business leader continues to inspire many. His new role on the CFR Global Board of Advisors reaffirms his position as a transformative leader dedicated to fostering inclusive growth, not just in Africa, but across the world.
