WHO Issues Marburg Virus Alert After 11 Deaths in Rwanda

The World Health Organization (WHO) has issued an alert to the Kenyan Ministry of Health after 11 deaths from Marburg Virus Disease (MVD) were reported in Rwanda. Health Cabinet Secretary Dr. Deborah Barasa confirmed the alert on Friday but assured that no cases had been reported in Kenya yet.

“We have received an alert from WHO on Marburg Virus Disease, but currently, there are no reported cases in Kenya,” Dr. Barasa stated. She urged the public to stay vigilant as the ministry ramped up surveillance, particularly at border points.

Marburg, a deadly viral disease originating from West Africa, presents symptoms such as high fever, severe headaches, vomiting, and bleeding from body openings. The outbreak in Rwanda has seen 11 fatalities since September 27, 2024, with 29 confirmed cases and over 290 contacts traced, many of whom were healthcare workers.

To prevent the spread of the virus, the ministry advised the public to avoid close contact with infected individuals, frequently wash hands or use sanitizers, and refrain from sharing personal items.
