Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Bii Chelilim has announced a sweeping crackdown on fraudulent employment agencies within the county, following a shocking revelation that over 300 residents were scammed out of millions of shillings with false promises of jobs in Canada.
In a strongly-worded statement issued on Sunday, Governor Chelilim vowed to revoke the licenses of any agencies found guilty of duping job seekers. "Effective immediately, my administration, in collaboration with relevant authorities, will launch a rigorous crackdown on these fraudulent operations," he declared. "We will revoke the operating licenses of any agency found to be in violation of regulations within our county."
The Governor's actions come on the heels of a media exposé that highlighted the plight of hundreds of victims who had fallen prey to unscrupulous businesses promising overseas employment. The exposé has sparked outrage, with many calling for stricter oversight of employment agencies.
Governor Chelilim also urged the National Employment Authority and the Ministry of Labour to enforce stricter vetting processes before approving any agency operations, stressing the need for accountability at all levels. "There must be accountability at all levels to protect our citizens and uphold the integrity of our city," he added.
Chelilim’s crackdown is part of a broader effort to restore trust in Eldoret, which was officially granted city status just last week. He condemned the actions of conmen and unscrupulous businessmen, stating that their activities have cast a shadow over the city's reputation. "While these activities have cast a negative light on our city, we want to assure everyone that this is not an accurate reflection of Eldoret," he said.
As Eldoret steps into its new role as a city, Governor Chelilim emphasized its potential as a beacon of growth and opportunity. "Eldoret is a vibrant, progressive, and cosmopolitan city, home to people from all walks of life and ever ready to welcome investors and visitors alike," he concluded. "Our county stands as a beacon of growth, opportunity, and innovation."
The Governor's decisive action is seen as a significant move to protect citizens from exploitation and uphold Eldoret’s new status as a city poised for continued development.
