Uasin Gishu County Assembly is set to vet Deputy Governor nominee Evans Kapkea this Tuesday, marking a significant step toward filling the vacancy left by Eng. John Barorot’s resignation in August. Kapkea, a 34-year-old seasoned politician and former Member of the County Assembly (MCA) for Tembelio Ward, is expected to assume the role, becoming the county's third deputy governor.

Eng. John Barorot, who served as Deputy Governor for two years, stepped down on August 21, 2024, to take on a new challenge as the Chief Executive Officer of a leading international ICT firm. His departure left a gap that the county is eager to fill, and Kapkea’s nomination has garnered strong support from within the assembly.

Kiplombe Ward MCA, Gilbert Lagat, expressed confidence in Kapkea’s abilities, saying, “We have worked closely with Kapkea over the years, and he has consistently demonstrated the leadership qualities needed to deputize Governor Jonathan Bii. His experience and dedication make him the ideal candidate for this role.”

Kapkea’s resume is impressive. He has served as the Chairperson of the Uasin Gishu County Assembly’s Trade, Industrialization, Tourism, and Investment Committee. Additionally, he has been an active member of several key committees, including Budget, Finance and Appropriations, Health, and Delegated Legislation.

As the vetting process begins, all eyes are on Kapkea, whose approval seems almost certain, given the overwhelming support from his colleagues. Should he pass the vetting, he will step into a role that will allow him to further shape the future of Uasin Gishu County.
