Spain Clinches Record Fourth UEFA European Championship with 2-1 Win Over England

Spain cemented their status as the most successful team in UEFA European Championship history, securing their fourth title with a dramatic 2-1 victory over England in the 2024 final at the Olympiastadion.

Gareth Southgate, often criticized for his tactical rigidity, surprised many by reverting to a defensive four, including Luke Shaw, who started his first competitive match since February. Despite Spain's early pressure, England’s full-backs effectively neutralized Spain’s wingers, Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams, limiting clear chances in the first half.

The match remained tense, with the first significant opportunity arriving in stoppage time of the first half. England's Phil Foden volleyed a flicked free-kick towards goal, but Unai Simón made a comfortable save, leaving the game goalless at halftime. Spain faced a setback as midfield anchor Rodri had to leave the field before the second half commenced.

Spain, however, started the second half with urgency, scoring within 70 seconds. Yamal found Williams, who slid the ball past Jordan Pickford to give Spain the lead. England, known for their resilience after trailing in earlier rounds, seemed rattled as Dani Olmo and Álvaro Morata both missed chances to extend Spain’s lead. Yamal came close again, but Pickford’s crucial save kept England in the game.

England’s persistence paid off when substitute Cole Palmer scored a stunning equalizer from the edge of the box, assisted by Jude Bellingham. The momentum shifted towards England, but Spain’s persistence paid off as they regained the lead. Another substitute, Mikel Oyarzabal, scored from close range after a precise cross from Marc Cucurella.

In the final moments, Spain's defense held firm, denying headers from John Stones, Marc Guéhi, and Declan Rice to secure their historic victory. Spain's triumph marks their fifth win in six major finals, contrasting sharply with England’s heartbreak in their second consecutive Euros final loss.
