Shocking Courtroom Attack: Makadara Law Courts Closed Following Magistrate's Shooting

In an unprecedented move, Chief Justice Martha Koome has ordered the immediate closure of the Makadara Law Courts until Monday, June 17, 2024, after a shocking incident where Principal Magistrate Monicah Kivuti was shot on the court premises.

Chief Justice Koome announced the temporary closure to facilitate enhanced security measures. "The Makadara Law Courts will remain closed until security reinforcements are completed. During this period, all scheduled cases will be conducted virtually, and physical hearings will be redirected to the Milimani Law Courts," stated Koome.

The closure follows a chilling attack where a senior police officer forcibly entered the courtroom and opened fire on Magistrate Kivuti. The officer's wife, Jenniffer Wairimu, had been remanded earlier by Kivuti for violating her bond terms in a case involving Ksh.2.9 million obtained under false pretenses.

In the aftermath of the attack, a court orderly and two officers who attempted to shield Magistrate Kivuti and secure the courtroom also sustained gunshot wounds. The Magistrate suffered injuries to her chest and pelvic area and is currently hospitalized.

Chief Justice Koome strongly condemned the violent act and underscored the urgent need for reinforced security across all court stations in Kenya. "The safety of our judicial officers and the sanctity of our courtrooms are paramount. We will take all necessary measures to ensure such incidents do not recur," she asserted.

Detectives have since secured and cleared the crime scene, with investigations ongoing to understand the full circumstances of the attack.

This disturbing event has sent shockwaves through the judicial community and beyond, prompting a nationwide discussion on courtroom security and the protection of judicial officers.
