Senator Gloria Orwoba proposes Regulation of Social Media Platform X in Kenya

Nominated Senator Gloria Orwoba has clarified her recent remarks about regulating the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, in Kenya. During a Senate hearing on October 3, Orwoba stirred debate by suggesting the need for regulations to address the misuse of platforms like X for spreading misinformation and hate speech.

Drawing from Brazil's recent ban of X for failing to comply with court orders, Orwoba highlighted concerns over the unchecked abuse of social media in Kenya. She noted that the spread of false information and personal attacks on innocent individuals, including violations of the Data Protection Act, are on the rise with increased internet access.

While calling for accountability, Orwoba urged the Senate to ensure the Communications Authority of Kenya and the Office of the Data Protection Commissioner enforce compliance from platforms like X. She also sought confirmation on whether major platforms like Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and X were properly registered in Kenya and questioned the measures in place to support victims of online abuse.

X, owned by billionaire Elon Musk, remains a popular platform in Kenya with 1.87 million users. Recently, it has served as a space for Kenyans to engage in national discussions, including a notable interaction between President William Ruto and Gen Z through X's audio feature, X Spaces.
