In a historic move, President William Ruto has nominated former Trade Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano as Kenya's next Attorney General. If confirmed, Miano will make history as the first female to hold this prestigious position. She is set to replace Justin Muturi, who served as the seventh Attorney General since Kenya's independence.
Miano's nomination marks a significant milestone in Kenya's legal and political landscape. Her diverse career has been marked by numerous groundbreaking achievements, and her new role will task her with formulating legal policies and ensuring the proper administration of the country's legal system.

Miano's journey to this nomination is impressive. She recently served as the Trade Cabinet Secretary, following a Cabinet reshuffle in October 2023. Before her tenure in the Trade Ministry, she was the Cabinet Secretary for the East African Community, where she implemented measures to promote development and enhance regional cooperation.
A trailblazer in the energy sector, Miano was the first female Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Kenya Electricity Generating Company PLC, a position she held for five years. Her leadership extended beyond the energy sector as she founded the Pink Energy forum to address gender issues within the industry.
With over three decades of experience in the energy sector, Miano is recognized as a distinguished business leader and public servant. Her accolades include being named Chairperson of the Year by Women on Boards in 2021 and receiving the Company Secretary of the Year award in the Champions of Governance Awards series in 2010. Additionally, she has been honored with the Order of the Grand Warrior of Kenya (OGW) and Moran of the Order of the Burning Spear for her exemplary service in the public sector.
Miano's academic credentials include a Bachelor of Law (LLB) Degree, a Diploma in Law, and post-graduate studies in Comparative Law. She is an active member of the Law Society of Kenya and has served on the Finance Committee of the National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK).
Reflecting on her nomination, Miano stated, "I am deeply honored and humbled by the trust placed in me. I am committed to serving my country with integrity and dedication, ensuring that our legal system upholds justice for all Kenyans."
As she prepares to step into this new role, the nation watches with anticipation, recognizing the significance of her appointment in breaking new ground for women in leadership and the legal profession.
