NTSA Bans Forward Travellers Sacco from Operating in Nairobi Following Fatal Accident

Nairobi, May 28, 2024 - The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has taken decisive action against Forward Travellers Sacco by suspending its operations in Nairobi. This decision comes in the wake of a tragic accident on Saturday, May 11, along Jogoo Road, which claimed three lives. The accident occurred as the matatu was en route from the Kayole area to Nairobi Central Business District (CBD).

The NTSA's directive has had immediate and widespread implications, affecting both the Sacco's operations and the daily routines of many Nairobi commuters. Forward Travellers Sacco officials have held closed-door meetings to plan their response to the ban, as reported by TV 47.

The suspension has left numerous commuters stranded, highlighting the vital role that the Sacco's matatus play in providing affordable and convenient transportation. One affected commuter expressed his concern, saying,

"This is where we get our money for daily usage. If Forward has done anything wrong, then the government, kindly help us."

The absence of Forward Travellers Sacco's services has led to a noticeable increase in fare prices among other matatus. Commuters have reported fare hikes ranging from KSh 100 to KSh 150 during rush hours, a significant jump from the usual fare of around KSh 70.

"You'll find matatus charging KSh 120-KSh 150 because they are few and want to make profits. Some people will be forced to walk due to the hiked prices," another commuter lamented.

As the situation unfolds, both commuters and Sacco officials await further developments and potential government intervention to address the transportation crisis in Nairobi.
