President Bola Tinubu on Sunday urged the suspension of protests against the rising cost of living, emphasizing the need for dialogue. This marks his first public address since widespread demonstrations began last week.
The protests, fueled by economic hardship, have turned violent, with Amnesty International reporting at least 13 deaths from clashes with security forces on the first day alone. Police, however, reported seven fatalities by Saturday, including four from an explosive device in Borno state, two from a car accident, and one shot by a guard during looting.
In a televised broadcast, President Tinubu called for an end to the violence, stating his openness to dialogue. "My dear Nigerians, especially our youth, I have heard you loud and clear. I understand the pain and frustration that drive these protests, and I want to assure you that our government is committed to listening and addressing the concerns of our citizens," he said.
The president's call for peace comes as tensions remain high across several states, highlighting the urgency of addressing the economic grievances fueling the unrest.
