Tensions flared in Kibera on Saturday as Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja faced a hostile reception from residents during a visit to the fire-ravaged Toi Market. The governor was forced to seek refuge after a section of the crowd began pelting him with stones, accusing him of mismanaging the county.
The chaotic scene unfolded as Governor Sakaja visited Toi Market, where an early morning fire claimed the lives of four people and destroyed numerous stalls and homes. The fire, which reportedly started around 4 a.m. due to an electrical fault, left the market in ruins and traders devastated.
In videos, residents can be seen angrily chanting and throwing stones at the governor. Security personnel quickly intervened, shielding Sakaja and escorting him to his car as the situation escalated.
Governor Sakaja had intended to offer reassurance and promise compensation to the affected traders using county disaster funds. However, his presence only seemed to exacerbate the frustration and anger among the crowd, who held him responsible for inadequate disaster management.
Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna confirmed the tragic loss of life, stating, "We had another fire at Toi Market this morning. I have spoken to area MP Peter Orero who confirms four people tragically lost their lives."
This incident underscores the urgent need for improved disaster response and support for the affected communities. As authorities investigate the cause of the fire and assess the damage, the focus remains on providing immediate relief and rebuilding trust between local leaders and residents.
