Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko condemned Oga Obinna and Kimani Mbugua’s father for publicly discussing Kimani’s alleged relapse Sonko had previously supported Kimani’s mental health journey in 2024 by settling his medical bills and transferring him to a better rehabilitation facility After Kimani's accusations against Obinna and distancing from his father, Sonko vowed to intervene by halting public discussions and ensuring Kimani resumes treatment Former Nairobi governor Mike Sonko has strongly condemned Oga Obinna and Kimani Mbugua’s father for accusing the ex-journalist of relapsing.

Sonko, who had previously extended significant support to Kimani during his mental health struggles, expressed disappointment over the public discussions surrounding the young journalist's recovery. His efforts were widely praised, and he even coordinated with Kimani's father during the process.
However, after Kimani’s release from the facility in December 2024, he went on a rant accusing Obinna of misusing funds donated by well-wishers. Kimani also distanced himself from his father, allegedly telling him to stay away. The situation escalated further during a live interview on Obinna TV on January 20, 2025, where Kimani’s father alleged that his son had relapsed.
Reacting to these developments, Sonko emphasised that the ongoing accusations and counter-accusations are detrimental to Kimani’s recovery. “It is important for Kimani Mbugua's father to recognise that his son is still in the process of recovery and should be treated with a lot of care, otherwise, Kimani may experience feelings of rejection and abandonment, potentially leading to detrimental actions.
Baba Kimani anafaa kujua bado ni mtoto wake akuwe mzuri ama mbaya bado ni wake," Sonko saidAdditionally, Sonko criticised Obinna for hosting the live discussion, urging him to use his platform responsibly. "Discussing Kimani Mbugua on Obina's live show was unnecessary, and I urge my good friend Obinna to use his platform with greater responsibility,” he stated.
The former governor pledged to reach out to both Obinna and Kimani’s father to stop further live discussions or public sharing of his condition. Furthermore, he vowed to ensure that Kimani returns to a rehabilitation centre for continued care. “Kimani Mbugua's mum and the sister hebu tafadhalini nirengesheeni yeye I will deal with his situation na atakuwa sawa,” Sonko assured
