Kimani Ichung’wah Dismisses Impeachment Plot Claims by DP Gachagua, Calls for Focus on National Issues

National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah has dismissed Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s recent claims of an impeachment plot against him, labeling it a “sympathy-seeking gimmick” aimed at inciting people from the Mt. Kenya region. Ichung’wah, the Kikuyu MP, made these remarks during a speech at the burial of his former employee and family friend George Owiro in Alego Usonga Constituency on Saturday.

In his sharp critique, Ichung’wah stated that Gachagua’s assertions were fabricated and meant to garner public sympathy. He warned that the DP’s statements were part of a strategy to pit the Mt. Kenya region’s electorate against their Members of Parliament (MPs).

“As a Leader of Majority, I can tell you there has never been an impeachment plan against him,” Ichung’wah said. “That has been a creation of those that he walks around with. It’s a sympathy-seeking gimmick to try and incite people from the Mt. Kenya region against MPs.”

Ichung’wah expressed concern over the DP’s comments, which he interpreted as a veiled threat to Kenyans, suggesting that Gachagua was implying political instability would follow any impeachment attempt. The lawmaker, however, emphasized that no MP had raised the idea of impeaching the Deputy President or initiated any move in that direction.

Despite Gachagua’s claims, Ichung’wah acknowledged that any MP is at liberty to bring an impeachment motion against the Deputy President, President, Cabinet Secretary, or any public official, pointing out that no one is exempt from such measures.

The Majority Leader speculated that Gachagua’s impeachment claims might be motivated by his long-term political ambitions, specifically a potential bid for the presidency in 2027. He suggested that the DP’s focus appeared to be on his personal interests rather than the nation’s.

"Gachagua has not said whether he's a candidate in 2027, though all indications show that he wants to run for president," Ichung’wah said. "But the focus we want him to have is on delivering the government’s manifesto, not personal ambitions."

Ichung’wah also highlighted the significance of the Nyahururu declaration, where over 69 MPs chose Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki as their primary liaison with the Executive. He emphasized that Kindiki plays a crucial role in ensuring the coordination of development projects in the Mt. Kenya region, calling on the DP to concentrate on promoting the government's agenda.

In his closing remarks, Ichung’wah urged Gachagua to prioritize addressing national issues in his public appearances rather than discussing personal matters. He criticized the DP for not focusing on people-centric issues, noting that it had been two years since Gachagua had publicly addressed the media on national matters.

“How I wish he would spend time on people-centric issues instead of selfish and parochial things,” Ichung’wah concluded, urging the DP to shift his focus back to governance and development.

The remarks set the stage for an intensifying political debate as Kenya’s leadership navigates internal dynamics ahead of the 2027 elections.
