How the Accident Happened

According to MSS spokesperson Jack Ombaka, the accident happened around 5 PM when two MaxxPro vehicles were involved in a towing operation. One vehicle developed mechanical problems, causing the crash.

Several officers and civilians were quickly rushed to Lambert Santé Hospital. Unfortunately, one Kenyan officer and a civilian were pronounced dead on arrival.

Injured Officers Receive Urgent Treatment

Ombaka confirmed that eight MSS officers suffered injuries. Three of them are in critical condition and require medical evacuation to the Dominican Republic for specialized treatment.

The injured first received emergency care at Aspen Level 2 Hospital before being stabilized for transfer. Ombaka expressed condolences to the families of those who lost their lives.

Kenya Working on Body Repatriation

The National Police Service (NPS) has confirmed that arrangements are underway to repatriate the fallen officer’s body back to Kenya. The next of kin have already been informed.

The NPS also assured that all injured officers are receiving quality medical attention and that their recovery remains a top priority.

MSS Mission Faces Challenges in Haiti

Kenya leads the MSS mission in Haiti, which was launched over a year ago to help restore security. However, the situation remains extremely volatile.

Haiti’s capital, Port-au-Prince, is now almost entirely controlled by armed gangs. Out of the planned 2,500 MSS officers, only about 1,000 from six countries have been deployed, including 700+ Kenyan officers.

UN Raises Concerns Over Limited Support

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has warned that Haiti remains "woefully underfunded" and the MSS lacks resources and capacity to deal with the growing crisis effectively.

Since the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse in 2021, Haiti has faced severe political instability and worsening insecurity.

In 2024, a presidential transition council took over leadership after Prime Minister Ariel Henry resigned. Elections are planned before February 2026, but security challenges continue to escalate.

Rising Violence in Haiti

According to the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, at least 3,141 people have been killed in Haiti during the first half of this year alone.
