Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka canceled two planned political rallies in Kitengela and Mlolongo on Sunday, citing police interference that blocked his access to a scheduled church service at AIC Kasina Church in Mlolongo. Musyoka, who was accompanied by Safina Party Leader Jimi Wanjigi, DAP-K leader Eugene Wamalwa, and Jubilee Secretary General Jeremiah Kioni, expressed disappointment after being stopped by the police on their way to the church.
Addressing a congregation at Glorious Gospel Center Church in Kitengela, Musyoka criticized the authorities for deploying police vehicles to prevent their movement, calling the act unnecessary and "shameful." He questioned the rationale behind the heavy police presence in Kitengela and Mlolongo, implying that the government was fearful of their political activities.
“No wonder the guilty are afraid. What is the reason for bringing in the police land rover outside here in Kitengela and Mlolongo? It is a shameful act,” he told the congregation.
Kalonzo also called upon newly appointed Inspector General of Police, Douglas Kanja, to address the increasing concerns of police misuse and ensure that the security forces remain impartial. He urged Kanja to take a firm stance in restoring public confidence in the police, emphasizing the need for every citizen to feel secure.
"I want to appeal to the new Inspector General of Police, Douglas Kanja, to stand there and make a difference so that all of us can feel secure,” Kalonzo added.
Despite the disruptions, Kalonzo seized the opportunity to assert his readiness to lead, dismissing the notion that he was merely in opposition to the government. He urged his critics to reconsider their view of him and his allies, asserting that his team was prepared to take over the government when the time comes.
Kalonzo’s remarks come at a time of growing political tension in Kenya, as opposition leaders continue to challenge the current administration while gearing up for future political battles. The Wiper leader's cancellation of the rallies may signal a strategy shift as his coalition navigates an increasingly contentious political environment.
