Five officers from the Gigiri police station have been released on a Ksh. 200,000 bond each after being implicated in the escape of 13 remandees, including Collins Jumaisi, a suspect in a high-profile murder case. Magistrate Martha Nanzushi granted the officers bond, citing a lack of compelling reasons for further detention, though they are required to report to the DCI twice weekly as investigations proceed.
The dramatic escape, which occurred earlier this week, has raised serious concerns about potential corruption and security lapses within the police force. The prisoners reportedly cut through a wire mesh to flee from the station’s basking bay, a move that acting Inspector General of Police Gilbert Masengeli suggested could be the result of an “inside job.” The incident has drawn widespread public outcry, particularly due to Jumaisi’s alleged involvement in a series of brutal murders.
As the investigation continues, the case has become a critical test of Kenya’s law enforcement integrity. The public and media are closely watching how authorities handle the situation, with the outcome likely to have significant implications for trust in the nation’s criminal justice system.
