Etihad Airways is rapidly expanding its presence in Kenya. Less than a year after launching flights between Nairobi and Abu Dhabi, the airline has announced a significant boost in capacity.
Starting October, Etihad will increase flights on the Nairobi–Abu Dhabi route from four to eight per week. By December 15, the number will rise further to 14 weekly flights, offering passengers more flexibility and convenience.

Strong Demand Driving Growth for Etihad Airways
According to Javier Alija, Etihad’s Vice President of Global Sales and Distribution, the decision is fueled by strong market performance.
“We wouldn’t grow in Nairobi if the route wasn’t performing well. Going from launch to double daily flights in under a year is remarkable,” Alija said.
This upgrade will triple capacity, raising available seats from 600 to over 2,200 per week. The increased frequency aims to meet growing travel demand between Kenya and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
Confidence in Kenya’s Aviation Market
Etihad’s executives believe the expansion highlights the airline’s confidence in Kenya’s aviation sector. With Nairobi becoming a major hub for both business and leisure travel, the airline aims to strengthen its competitive edge.
“When there is no healthy competition, businesses become complacent. At Etihad, innovation drives us forward. Our slogan, Beyond Borders, reflects this commitment,” Alija added.
Part of Etihad’s Wider African Strategy
The Nairobi expansion is part of Etihad Airways’ broader African growth plan. The airline is:
Launching new routes across the continent
Increasing flight frequencies on high-demand destinations
Building strategic partnerships with other carriers
With these moves, Etihad is positioning itself as a key player in connecting Africa to the Middle East and beyond.
