Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has expressed concern that his key supporters backing his efforts for Mount Kenya unity are facing targeted intimidation.
Addressing a church gathering in Ruiru on Friday, the DP reiterated that his attempts to unify leaders and residents of the central region have met significant challenges. He highlighted receiving reports of leaders aligned with him being pressured to sever their ties with him.
Some are being intimidated, coerced, and threatened. If they call for unity, they are warned they won't receive projects, and if they are seen with the deputy president, things will change for them.
The Deputy President, however, dismissed his critics, emphasizing that criticism and unwarranted motives have been inherent in Kenyan politics since independence.
He reaffirmed that his advocacy for the "one man, one shilling, one vote" principle remains steadfast and unstoppable. He confirmed that the unity of the mountain is unstoppable and complete, with only one percent of dissenting leaders left to unite.
In a move to woo unity from other leaders outside Mount Kenya, the DP expressed his interest in working closely with Wiper Party Leader Kalonzo Musyoka.
In an unexpected turn, political bigwigs including Democratic Action Party leader Eugine Wamalwa backed his unity quest.
The second in command called on other leaders to follow suit and unite other regions. During his unity call, he hinted at establishing new political partners in readiness for possible political realignments. Wiper Leader Kalonzo Musyoka and DAP party leader Eugine Wamalwa shared a podium with DP Gachagua for the first time since the general elections. The three seemed to speak in one voice.
Hinting at a possible merger, the DP wooed Kalonzo, noting that they are ready to work with leaders from other communities.
This comes a day after the DP attended the inauguration ceremony of South African President Cyril Ramaphosa. He held talks with AU candidate Raila Odinga on the sidelines of the ceremony.
