Leading figures in Kenya’s creative industry have issued a stern warning to President William Ruto, urging him not to sign the Finance Bill 2024 into law, lest he faces irreversible consequences.
The impassioned plea was spearheaded by comedian-turned-activist Eric Omondi during a ceremony at Carnivore Grounds honoring his late brother Fred Omondi, tragically lost in a recent Nairobi road accident. Addressing President Ruto directly, Eric Omondi declared, “Do not attempt, do not think, do not imagine, do not dream, do not put pen to paper.”
Joining Eric were renowned artists including Churchill, MC Jessy, Dr Ofweneke, Terrence Creative, and DJ Shiti, who echoed the sentiment that "Kenya will never be the same again."
This warning to President Ruto comes amid escalating public outcry over the Finance Bill 2024, which proposes contentious tax measures nationwide. The discontent was palpable at the 'Last Laugh' ceremony, where Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba faced a frosty reception from the audience, characterized by booing and jeering that cut short his speech. Churchill’s attempt to diffuse tension marginally eased the atmosphere, underscoring resistance to the fiscal policies.
The Finance Bill 2024 has sparked protests across 17 regions including Nairobi, Kisumu, Mombasa, and Eldoret. Young Kenyans took to the streets, challenging what they see as a burdensome financial plan despite police resistance.
Critics argue President Ruto’s Ksh3.9 trillion financial blueprint will strain the economy, demanding its rejection for fiscal accountability. The bill, seen to fund national projects, has united dissenters under the cry “Ruto Must Go! Occupy Eldoret! Reject Finance Bill!”
Their message resonates through streets and social media, amplifying urgency for their cause.
