COTU's Atwoli Outlines Strategies to Curb Youth-Led Protests in Kenya

COTU Secretary General Francis Atwoli revealed measures to counter anti-government protests led by young Kenyans. Speaking in Kisumu, Atwoli shared that he advised President William Ruto to mandate that 10% of employees in all parastatals and ministries be youth, aiming to tackle high unemployment. This approach mirrors a 1972 initiative by the late President Jomo Kenyatta.

Atwoli also suggested merging some counties to reduce government spending and increase funds for development, addressing concerns raised by Gen Z protesters about economic inefficiencies. He urged President Ruto to ensure efficient use of taxpayer money.

Protests, sparked by corruption, high taxes, and unemployment, began on June 28. A recent Infotrak survey identified unemployment and the high cost of living as key protest drivers. In response, the government dismissed cabinet secretaries and curtailed unnecessary travel. President Ruto, who promised job creation during his campaign, has since unveiled a new cabinet.
