Concerns Mount as Video of Man Allegedly Brandishing Firearm at Anti-Finance Bill Protest Circulates

A video capturing a man purportedly wielding a firearm during an anti-Finance Bill protest has ignited widespread fear and speculation across Kenya. Shared on social media platform X, the one-minute clip shows the unidentified individual leading a group of demonstrators carrying placards against the controversial Finance Bill 2024 along a busy highway.

In the video, the man, clad in black attire and an Arafat scarf, boldly declares, “Mimi siogopi mtu (I don’t fear anyone), I only fear God. Peaceful demonstrations, we are not blocking the road,” as he gestures with what appears to be a firearm.

Authorities, upon investigation, have confirmed that the weapon in question is a dummy. Nevertheless, concerns persist over the presence of such items at public protests and the potential implications for public safety. Police sources informed The Star that efforts are underway to locate and question the man regarding the incident.

The video has sparked a flurry of reactions online, with many questioning the circumstances under which the man obtained the firearm. Speculations abound, with some suggesting possible affiliations with government agencies, while others express apprehension about the security implications of such displays during peaceful protests.

As tensions surrounding the Finance Bill 2024 continue to escalate, the incident underscores the delicate balance between freedom of expression and maintaining public order. Authorities face mounting pressure to address these concerns and ensure the safety of all citizens engaged in lawful demonstrations across the country.
