Bukusu Council of Elders Vows to Defend Governor Natembeya, Warns of Political Repercussions

Trans Nzoia - A powerful warning was issued by the Bukusu Council of Elders against any attempts to impeach Governor George Natembeya, who has become a vocal figure in the region's political scene. The elders, who gathered at Kitale Museum, strongly condemned the move, stating that it could lead to intense political repercussions if the motion goes forward.

Led by Council Chairman Peter Masinde, the Bukusu elders spoke out firmly against the impeachment motion, highlighting that it was politically motivated and lacked any solid, justifiable grounds. The proposed impeachment comes amid claims made by Natembeya regarding alleged plans by leaders from the Kenya Kwanza coalition to remove him due to his vocal stance against President William Ruto's government.

Masinde emphasized that such political maneuvers could destabilize the region, leading to long-lasting negative consequences. He also warned that any further attempts to undermine Natembeya would not be tolerated by the people of Trans Nzoia, a sentiment echoed by other elders.

Elder Kolia Chakali, one of the council's prominent members, voiced the community's anger at the impeachment bid, labeling it an insult to the Luhya people. Chakali, clad in traditional Bukusu attire, passionately declared that the people of Trans Nzoia had made their choice through the ballot, and any move to unseat their governor would be seen as disrespectful to their democratic rights.

"We do not want any words to touch or interfere with our governor, George Natembeya. We are the ones who elected him, and anyone who interferes with him is interfering with the elders and the people of Trans Nzoia; they are disrespecting us Luhyas completely. That, removing him, we cannot accept at all. We will remove those who want to remove our governor. We will remove them; we, the citizens, will rise and protest in Trans Nzoia to remove them," said Kolia.

Eliud Wafula, another elder, also weighed in on the matter, cautioning the MCAs behind the impeachment motion to apologize for their actions or face dire consequences. He suggested that the elders would be forced to take more drastic measures to safeguard their community's interests.

The Bukusu elders urged that any grievances with Governor Natembeya be brought before them for discussion, stating that they were open to resolving issues through dialogue rather than through politically motivated actions.

As tensions rise, the fate of Governor Natembeya’s position remains uncertain. However, the elders' staunch opposition to the impeachment motion signals that the political environment in Trans Nzoia could become increasingly volatile if the motion proceeds. Whether the MCAs will heed the warnings from the Bukusu elders remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: the people of Trans Nzoia are determined to protect their elected governor at all costs.

The Bukusu Council of Elders’ firm stance against the impeachment motion emphasizes the deep connection between Trans Nzoia's people and their leadership. As political temperatures rise, it is clear that the people will not tolerate any threats to the leadership they have chosen.
