Human rights activist Boniface Mwangi was released on Monday from Kamukunji Police Station without charges, following a weekend arrest that stirred widespread public outcry and drew condemnation from civil society groups.
Mwangi’s arrest, which took place early Sunday morning, reportedly involved six unidentified individuals who forcibly entered his home around 7:15 AM and detained him without an arrest warrant or explanation. Mwangi’s wife, Njeri Mwangi, reported the incident, stating that their children were left unattended as the men took her husband away.
Mwangi's detention appeared connected to a social media post he shared on Saturday, in which he called on Kenyans to “occupy” the Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon in protest against the Kenya Kwanza administration, a message authorities viewed as incitement. Following his disappearance, Kenyans on social media and human rights organizations mobilized to demand his release, tracking him through multiple police stations before locating him at Kamukunji Police Station.
Hussein Khalid, a fellow human rights activist, confirmed Mwangi’s release on Monday with a video showing a heartfelt reunion with his wife and children. Narc Kenya party leader Martha Karua was also present, expressing solidarity with Mwangi and his family.
“I can confirm firmly that Boniface Mwangi has been freed with no charges. His wife, children, and friends were there during his release,” stated Khalid.
Mwangi's arrest and subsequent release highlight the mounting pressures faced by activists in Kenya, raising concerns about freedom of expression and the safety of outspoken citizens.
