Boniface Mwangi Released on 20,000 cash Bail

ANairobi court released activist Boniface Mwangi and four co-accused individuals on cash bail of Ksh20,000 each. The group faces accusations of inciting violence during recent anti-government demonstrations.

Police had sought to detain Mwangi, Robert Otieno, Albert Wambugu, Pablo Chacha, and Erot Franco for 21 days to conclude their investigations. The arrests took place on July 25, 2024, on Koinange Street, Nairobi, where the group allegedly disrupted public order.

State Prosecutor Judy Koech claimed that the accused obstructed traffic by placing a white coffin and seven white crosses on the street, symbolizing individuals purportedly killed by police during the protests. Koech argued that these actions, along with social media posts by the suspects, suggested government-sanctioned extrajudicial killings, thereby inciting public unrest.

The court's decision to grant bail allows the accused to await further legal proceedings while investigations continue. The case has drawn significant public attention, highlighting ongoing tensions between government authorities and activists in Kenya.
